LEGO Technic 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover

The LEGO Technic 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover is a fictional six-wheeled crew vehicle, designed with input from NASA engineers and inspired by NASA Mars rover concepts.

The model is packed with functions: the chassis expands from a compact transport mode to reveal a truck bed, the front axle steers, and oscillating axles help the wheels follow uneven ground. A working crane lifts cargo such as the small robot rover and fuel reactor, while a geared lift at the back lowers the crew to the surface.

Open the cab to find two seats and detailed control panels, and inside the living quarters there is seating, a shower, toilet, treadmill and fridge. Recycling and sample containers plus gas and water canisters complete the mission kit, and a special air-lock element allows connection to compatible space-themed LEGO sets.

With 1,599 pieces and an 11+ age rating, it is a meaty, rewarding build for older children and adults who enjoy engineering and space exploration. When expanded it measures over 44 cm long, so it makes a bold display piece. It is a fascinating set for discussing how real crews might live and work on Mars.

Released in 2024 and now retired, this rover is a great way to fuel curiosity about future missions to the Red Planet.
